MENTAL – EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS (Psychiatric)

Although most of us live in a relatively affluent and ordered society, mental and emotional problems, ranging from mild anxiety to severe mental illness, are widespread and appear to be on the increase.

Whilst conventional treatments for these conditions are sometimes helpful, the ancient Chinese understanding of what it is to be a human being offers a path to a more balanced state of mind and a life lived in harmony with the natural world around us.  It is this understanding which informs the Traditional Chinese Medical treatment of these conditions.  From this perspective, so many of the mental and emotional problems which afflict us nowadays are symptomatic of a deep seated loss of connection both with the world around us and with our own humanity.

Our approach at the Sean Barkes Clinic is to help people to restore those connections.  Calming the anxious mind, lifting the weight of depression from our shoulders, putting us back in touch with what is vital and alive within ourselves and without.

People are sometimes surprised that acupuncture is used to treat such problems, but it must be remembered that in the traditional Chinese world-view, the body and the mind are not two separate entities but manifestations of the same basic energy.

Disclaimer
The Sean Barkes Clinic does not claim to cure any conventional medical disease states.  Traditional Chinese Medicine seeks to re-establish and maintain the harmonious function of the human body-mind using tried and tested principles that have been discovered and matured over millennia.  A Western medical diagnosis provides very little by way of insight in informing a Chinese Medical diagnosis.  Patients usually recognise their own condition in terms of the medical disease category that they have been given by their GP or other conventional medical practitioner.  The research presented here is merely an indication of the potential to draw parallels between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Modern Western Medicine.
